Teun Hocks

These are all oil on toned gelatin silver print. They are also untitled. I just recently found out that another one of my favorite artists does a similar technique, Gottfried Helwein. I have yet to find out what makes this an okay technique. Hocks has more reasoning behind using photographs because he manipulates them more than Gottfried Helwein who just makes photographs look more painterly. Hocks makes witty paintings and adds illustrative themes to remind us of the sillier things in life.

Some Gottfried Helwein photos, completely different approach obviously, but still captivating...

  1. Researching surrealism and found this blog. Thank you. Thank you for describing the technique. I'd have thought all were oil paintings.
